I spent a month in Italy this summer, landing in Rome for a few days (love visiting my friend Andrea and his family there), before heading to the Amalfi Coast to prep for my first Slow Art Retreat. My friend Micol met me in Atrani (from Bologna where I lived years ago) and we tested out my retreat itinerary together, finding the best restaurants, beaches, & views.. Then the group arrived and we had an INCREDIBLE week of lettering, sketching, painting, sight-seeing, wandering, swimming, and of course eating!! But I think the most wonderful and unexpected success of the retreat was the camaraderie -- the friendships made and the sweet vibe of creative souls coming together. It was a beautiful week, but add in all the love and it was truly magical. I learned so much from each participant, and I also figured out a few things I want to do differently next time. YES there will be a 2017 Slow Art Retreat, stay tuned!
I was in Paris this spring, and lucky enough to stay near the Pont Neuf. It was such a treat to watch the sun rise (thanks to jet lag) and set from the Seine! During my free time and days off i walked all over Paris, through parks and markets, stopping in cafes for a break or a bite, and wandering into church after church.
Early in the week I taught Lettering & Branding to wedding professionals for Joy Proctor's Design Intensive -- such a beautiful day! We took several rooms at the gorgeous Maison des Polytechniciens, creating style boards and editorials for tabletop, bridal, and stationery, with stunning florals from Bows and Arrows Flowers, and invaluable tips from wedding photographer Greg Finck.
Later that week I organized a Hidden Gems Tour of the super chic Marais district with Coco Kliks, the renowned fashion designer turned Parisienne & world traveler (check out her new luxury travel company: Travellur !). It was a day of inspiration and opulence, visiting royal homes of the baroque period like Hotel de Soubise (now the National Archives), stopping for tea and treats at the divine Mariage Freres, and ending our day with a live concert in my favorite jewel box of a church, Sainte Chapelle.
I taught a Modern Calligraphy Workshop over the weekend (serving tea & macaroons of course!), and then I assisted on a Paris photoshoot for the incredible San Francisco based wedding photographers Vero Suh and Augie Chang. Together with Maria Chang, makeup artist, and french model Marion Mcr (pictured in dress by Galia Lahav), we traveled across the city with 3 different couture dresses for an iconic editorial story in the City of Love. It was beyond dreamy!
